Thursday Thirteen - 9th Edition

Phobias

1. Mysophobia: Fear of being contaminated with dirt or germs . My children definitely do not have this one, quite the opposite. See below.

2. Ablutophobia: Fear of washing, bathing, or cleaning. Who knew?

3. Brontophobia: Fear of thunder and lightning. I can't imagine. It's one of my favorite things.

4. Coprophobia: Fear abhorrence of feces and fecal matter.Children could either make ya or break ya on this one.

5. Emetophobia: Fear of vomiting. Understandable.

6. Necrophobia: Fear of death or dead things. Again, not one my kids are familiar with.

7. Kakorrhaphiophobia: Fear of failure or defeat. I think many of us are afflicted by this one.

8. Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia: Fear of long words. Come on! Who has this??

9. Nephophobia: Fear of clouds. I don't really get this one.

10. Phagophobia: Fear of being Eaten. Huh?

11. Gephyrophobia: Fear of crossing bridges. I used to be terrified of bridges as a little girl. They still freak me out a little.

12. Agoraphobia: Fear of open spaces, leaving a safe place, or crowded public places. I did a search for tunnel phobia and found that it would be classified under this or claustrophobia. Tunnels kind of freak me out too. I hate those movies where people are trapped in the big tunnels.

13. Philophobia: Fear of faling in Love.

Ultimately we know deeply that the other side of every fear is a freedom.

Most of those I have never heard of! very interesting. I'm glad to say I don't have any phobias.

Wow, what a list. I never knew there were so many phobias with unpronounceable names.

#3 is a good thing if you are golfing in NC or Florida!

My biggest fear is of drowning (I have no idea what the -phobia is). Plus a whole slew of other minor phobias, but I try to battle them as I go.

Birds!

Years ago I went to do a meeting with one of the top Senatorial aides in DC. First time meeting him - Air and Space Museum. We walked out of the building to a scene out of the birds. I jump into his arms - broke the ice!

Koumpounophobia: A fear of buttons!
I would love to hear more about this one.

Ornithophobia: Fear of birds. I have definitely been freaked out by birds before.

I did a list a long time ago on phobias (because we watch MONK in our home); these are interesting, but every phobia list should have snakes included!! Or the fear of number 13, or the fear of heights, or.......
sorry, I tend to go on sometimes!
Have a great Easter weekend!

That's amazing. These poor people - so very sad. I can't imagine being so tortured by something like this.

Happy TT!

I most relate to Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia. Go figure.

Love your list! I found a phobia website once, and it kept me entertained for a couple of hours at least! Who knew there were so many things to fear??? Once I saw a lady on television FREAK OUT because of a jar of olives. The show host kept chasing her around with them, too. It was hysterical!

Great stuff to learn about. I knew some of the terms, but not all. And this whole post reminded me of a line in the movie "The Bandits" with Bruce Willis and Billy Bob Thorton [a line I love very much, lol]

So, you're probably wishin' I'd share the line? No? Well, I'm gonna put it here anyway......

The two are bank robbers and they're talking about going to Old Mexico when they have all the money they need...Billy Bob talks about the dirt and contaminates in that country, and he says "You know I have sanitary issues". Sorry, I guess you need to be watching the movie to see the humor in this. Or maybe, be married to an OCD mate. LOL

I have Necrophobia since my brother's death. Hopefully it will subside as time goes by.

Happy TT!

#8 made me laugh! i'm with you...i might benefit from my kids having a couple of those (at least on some days!) happy TT!

Bethany said...

Fear of being eaten?? Really?! LOL...too funny :D Hope you have a wonderful TT :D

Anne B. said...

I suddenly feel refreshingly normal! Thanks!

Karina said...

Great list. I think number 8 is a really really cruel joke. I mean, if you have that fear, than you can't really tell anyone you have it, because you have that fear...just cruel. (and kind of funny).

Mia Celeste said...

Wow, who would think there's so many names for fear? Happy TT!

Anonymous said...

Heard few of these. But it's my first time to hear some i.e #8. I never had fear of words -long or otherwise - not until I read #8. Lol.

The few I heard of I suffer ;)
The few I haven't heard of, I don't want to contend with. Excellent theme for T13.
Hope you'll drop by The Cafe for mine.

Whoa, that's an awesome list of fears! Happy TT!

Hmm...interesting... :)

I'm cool with bridges...draining grates, though, now those I don't like to walk on.

Teena in Toronto said...

Thankfully I don't have any of those phobias. Yay!

Thanks for stopping by mine :)

Unknown said...

I think I have minor forms of #s 6 and 11.

I'm a little better about crossing bridges than I used to, but I still don't like them, especially very high, very long ones like the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Bridge.

Karen said...

Wow, those were very interesting. I wish my brain could remember all of them.

Melanie said...

I think #8 is funny. If I had that I would have to be afraid of the name of my own disease.

Insteresting list!

My favorite is still "triskaidekaphobia" --fear of the number 13. I've done several blog posts relating to it.

Whenever I think of phobias I think of the famous sequence in "A Charlie Brown Christmas" featuring Lucy reciting a list of these. And especially the part where poor Charlie shouts "That's IT" when she gets to "pantophobia"--the fear of everything!
